Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.

Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the ability to contest specific rulings made by the official, following the practice already in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move arrives only a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to review specific situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent example occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined the player was responsible for interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at The Championships this year involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
