UK Expands Methanol Toxicity Alert Roster with 11 Nations
British Foreign Office has included 11 new nations to its official warning register about the risks of methanol toxicity from tainted alcoholic drinks.
This expanded warning features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to what officials describe as "an international surge in the frequency of reported cases" of toxic alcohol contamination.
Just a few weeks ago, authorities had previously placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing register, after multiple notable events like the fatal loss of six tourists in Laos in 2024.
Tourists are being warned that even tiny quantities of methanol can cause vision loss or loss of life within 12–48 hours.
What is Industrial Alcohol and How is it Employed?
Methanol is a harmful industrial alcohol commonly used in antifreeze, car cleaning liquid, and paint thinner. This substance is not designed for drinking.
Although it is naturally produced during the creation of beverages, reputable manufacturers reduce it to non-dangerous concentrations for drinking through the purification method.
However in some countries, it is clandestinely blended into alcoholic drinks to reduce expenses, and as it is flavorless and smell-free, it is extremely challenging to identify.
Authorities' Guidance for Travellers
Authorities representative Hamish Falconer said that each tourist should be aware of the indicators of methanol toxicity.
"While drinking spirits overseas, opt for reputable establishments and steer clear of local brews or complimentary drinks," Falconer advised.
"If something appears suspicious, such as a headache that's way worse than typical or sight issues – seek medical attention right away."
The entire list of destinations identified as posing a risk of methanol poisoning now includes: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
