A uniquely yellow-colored residential building visible behind helped us locate the footage.

Our team is verifying images and video shared earlier today that show the aftermath of a reported car bomb blast that Russian officials state fatally injured a senior military officer in Moscow.

Officials in Russia stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that detonated and that he later died of his wounds. An investigation is under way.

Our starting point to check the location of where the images were from relied on social media reports indicating the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.

We used street-view imagery on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a adjacent residential complex captured in the video.

Identifying additional structures, lamp-posts and the road configuration confirmed where the pictures were taken.

We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the visuals had not been manipulated.
