Inexperienced Team Confronts Early Test at Bayern's Home

Under the Italian manager, the young Blues will step onto Europe’s biggest stage after a two-year absence. Their first test comes against the German powerhouse on Wednesday evening. But the defender shows no nerves concerning their youthful roster.

He pointed to the recent worldwide title demonstrating that Chelsea can truly compete for the European crown.

Drawing from Experience

"The season is young," commented the skipper. "There's no question in the team’s capacity to challenge with top-tier opponents in Europe and the world. Our approach is week by week and see our progress by the conclusion."

Chelsea's captain has plenty of experience in top European games. He remembered a painful defeat facing Munich back in 2020, when the Bavarians eased past Chelsea in the round of 16.

"Growth comes from defeats," added the England international. "I encountered this team previously and it was a humbling experience. Matches like that make you stronger and will help going into the upcoming match."

Changing Squad

Following Chilwell's departure abroad, James is now the sole remaining member from Chelsea’s European Cup winning team. "Chelsea has undergone significant turnover," he said. "I wouldn’t say negative. Last season we qualified among Europe's best and won two pieces of silverware. We have progressed."

Unexpected Move

James also expressed surprise regarding the deal that sent Jackson to the German champions. The Senegal international can play to face the Blues this week.

"It was unexpected," James revealed. "I think the player wanted a resolution and the club accommodated. I don't know how it unfolded, yet he remains a terrific player."

Tactical Insights

Manager Enzo Maresca remarked that Jackson could give the opponents details on their tactics. "It could represent a minor benefit as he can explain our system, how we plan," noted Maresca. "He was with one entire year in the squad, and is familiar with the way we play."

Maresca also dismissed rumors of disagreements with Jackson. "There was never any friction with the player, and that hasn't changed," Maresca said. "He is a professional, committed, and gave his best with us."

He expects that Cole Palmer can recover to start shaking off an injury.
