SNAP Payments Set to Cease for Over 40 Million During Continuing US Government Shutdown
The United States Department of Agriculture announced this past weekend that monthly food benefits through a critical national social assistance programs won't be issued next month amid the persistent federal closure.
Closure Continues Into 25th Day
The funding lapse was in three and a half weeks when the announcement was made, coming after demands from hundreds of House Democrats asking agriculture officials to utilize contingency funds to fund the upcoming nutrition payments.
“Bottom line, funds are depleted,” the department confirmed. “Now, there will be no benefits issued” starting next month.
Widespread Impact
Over 40 million Americans count on the regular assistance, as reported by official statistics. Some regions, like New Mexico, dependence on the program affects 21% of residents.
A memo obtained by journalists revealed that USDA officials would not access contingency funding for the upcoming payments.
Legislative Deadlock
Congressional leaders remain deadlocked over how to fund and reopen the federal government.
Remarks from the head of a prominent policy organization indicated that the White House had chances to act sooner to avoid interruption in payments.
“It could have, and should have taken steps earlier to be prepared to use these funds,” the comments added. “Rather, it may choose not to use them for potential political benefit” while GOP lawmakers attempt to influence Democratic senators to support a spending bill that would resume federal functions.
States Prepare
Governors in multiple regions declared states of emergency this week to make money available for hunger relief expecting nutrition assistance payments stopping next month.
