The beloved police drama Line of Duty will make a comeback for its 7th season, announced by the BBC.

A brand new six-episode series written by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Northern Ireland in the coming months, according to the network.

Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the return, stating she was "so excited" about the series' return. Her co-star added, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together next year."

The last season concluded in 2021 with a final episode that attracted more than 17 million audience members. Speculation about a new season have been circulating ever since, but official word only arrived this week.

New Challenges for AC-12

The seventh season will open with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to production details.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain working to tackle corruption within the law enforcement.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, these officers are assigned their "most delicate case to date."

Fresh Face and Intricate Plot

An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer known for busts of organized crime, faces allegations of abusing his position to act as a offender.

Yet, his case could be a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still active in the shadows, the teaser suggested.

In a statement, Jed Mercurio said: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."

"It's an honor to have had so many followers track the ups and downs of AC-12 over multiple series and we are thrilled to be coming back for a seventh installment."

He added: "Corruption in the UK was thought to be over while the series was off air, so I've been forced to use my imagination."

Actor Responses

The Scottish actor described being part of the series as "a job of a lifetime".

"Beyond the show's success but the colleagues I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he added.

Vicky McClure stated: "It goes without saying I'm very happy Line of Duty is back! Eager to work with Jed, Compston and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"

Adrian Dunbar commented: "As we count down the AC-12 return, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be back filming next year."

"Pleased with the announcement and anticipating those unexpected twists and turns."

Show History

The drama premiered in the early 2010s and evolved into a highly successful TV dramas of the past ten years, attracting notable actors such as Stephen Graham.

Broadcasters has not yet announced exactly the new season will premiere.

The conclusion of season six drew the extended plot about the hunt for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and the creative team indicated at the time there were no intentions for further series.

Nevertheless, the network announced on this week that a new season is now in development.
