Giants QB Wilson Fires Back at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Regarding Quarterback Comments
New York Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson didn't mince words on social media this Tuesday, responding to recent comments from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.
"Classless... but not shocked...," Wilson declared via social media. "Had no idea you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the media."
Wilson's remarks directly referenced the notorious Bounty Gate controversy from 2009-11, when Payton led the Saints.
At that time, the league found that the Saints had rewarded players for delivering aggressive tackles on rival teams. As a result, Payton was suspended from the league for a full year.
The Cause of the Recent Exchange
The quarterback's reaction came after Payton made comments after the Broncos' remarkable 33-32 win over the Giants. The coach suggested that the team had "discovered new energy" with their new QB, who has replaced Wilson as the first-string QB.
Moreover, Payton hinted that he had told team owner John Mara that he would prefer facing Wilson over Dart.
"I spoke to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We were hoping that change would've happened well after our game,'" Payton commented.
Context of the Coach-QB Partnership
- Wilson joined the Broncos from Seattle in 2022 and signed a five-year, $245M contract.
- The team went 4 wins and 11 losses in his first season before the team brought in Payton, who was returning to coaching after a stint in broadcasting.
- Payton replaced Wilson late into the 2023 season, a move that ensured the player from getting injured.
If Wilson remained on the team by March 2024, his $37M salary for 2025 would have been locked in. In the end, Wilson was released, marking the ugly breakup between the player and his mentor.
