An esteemed Russian military figure has been killed following an blast in Moscow, according to reports from authorities.
The attack took place on Monday morning when an bomb placed beneath a vehicle exploded, leading to the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.
Sarvarov held the position of the head of the armed forces' department for training operations.
Authorities stated that one possible explanation suggests the alleged involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. To date, Ukraine has not issued a comment.
Site of the Blast
Officials have been dispatched to the scene, which is reportedly in a southern district of the metropolis.
Reports indicate the explosion took place in a car park close to a residential building.
Pattern of Incidents
Since the start of the full-scale conflict in Ukraine, a series of Russian military personnel have been targeted within Moscow.
This new event comes after other serious incidents, including:
- General Yaroslav Moskalik was died in a vehicle explosion in Moscow earlier this year.
- General Igor Kirillov perished in late 2024 when a device concealed on a scooter was triggered from afar.
While a source from Ukraine previously attributed Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such claims are rarely publicly admitted as a matter of standard practice.
Hostilities has been marked by shadowy operations moving into the streets of the Russian capital.
The probe into General Sarvarov's death remains active.
